Reka Industrial Plc: Reka Cables to commit to Science Based Targets to increase its climate action efforts
Reka Industrial Plc’s subsidiary Reka Cables has committed to the international Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), driving ambitious climate action. In accordance with the initiative, Reka Cables will set emission reduction targets, which support the policy of the Paris agreement on climate change to limit global heating to a maximum of 1.5 degrees Celsius. The targets apply both to Reka Cables’ own operations (Scope 1 & 2) and the whole supply chain (Scope 3).
Reka Cables has committed to the strictest Net Zero target, which obligates the company to set both short-term and long-term targets. On a global scale, Reka Cables is amongst the first 1,000 or so companies that have committed to the strictest Net Zero target.
Already prior to its commitment to SBTi, Reka Cables has made sustained efforts to cut its emissions. In 2021, Reka Cables announced that it had cut the CO2 emissions of its operations by 80% compared to 2019 by switching to green process electricity and using solar power at its factories in Keuruu and Riihimäki, for example. The company has compensated for the remaining emissions in full since November 2021. With the agreement, Reka Cables’ entire supply chain will be included in the climate action efforts. “Reducing the emissions of our own operations was the first step, but fighting climate change requires more robust measures and everyone’s commitment. This is why we are committed to setting more ambitious targets for our whole supply chain,” says Jukka Poutanen, CEO, Reka Cables.
Reka Cables has started to specify concrete targets. Once complete, the company aims to have the targets approved by the Science Based Targets (SBT) climate organisation. The timescale for the presentation and approval of these emission reduction targets is two years.
Information about the Science Based Targets initiative:Established in 2015, the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is an international climate initiative, which is backed by the World Resources Institute (WRI), WWF, the UN Global Compact initiative and the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP). The companies that are committed to the initiative set themselves science-based emission reduction targets, which are based on the Paris agreement on climate change. So far, 61 Finnish companies have joined the initiative, 50 of them industrial companies.

Reka Industrial Oyj: Reka Kaapeli vahvistaa ilmastotoimiaan sitoutumalla Science Based Targets -päästövähennysaloitteeseen
Reka Industrial Oyj:n tytäryhtiö Reka Kaapeli Oy on sitoutunut kansainväliseen Science Based Targets -aloitteeseen (SBTi), joka ajaa kunnianhimoisia ilmastotekoja. Aloitteen mukaisesti Reka Kaapeli tulee määrittämään päästövähennystavoitteet, jotka tukevat Pariisin ilmastosopimuksen linjausta rajoittaa maapallon lämpeneminen korkeintaan 1,5 asteeseen. Tavoitteet koskevat niin Reka Kaapelin omaa toimintaa (Scope 1 & 2) kuin koko toimitusketjua (Scope 3).
Reka Kaapeli on sitoutunut vaativimpaan Net Zero -tavoitteeseen, joka velvoittaa yritystä asettamaan sekä lyhyen että pitkän aikavälin tavoitteet. Reka Kaapeli on maailmanlaajuisesti noin 1 000 ensimmäisen yrityksen joukossa, jotka ovat sitoutuneet tiukimpaan Net Zero -tavoitteeseen.
Jo ennen sitoutumistaan SBT -aloitteeseen Reka Kaapeli on tehnyt pitkäjänteistä työtä päästöjen vähentämiseksi. Vuonna 2021 Reka Kaapeli tiedotti pienenentäneensä oman toimintansa CO₂-päästöjä 80 % vuoteen 2019 verrattuna mm. vaihtamalla vihreään prosessisähköön sekä hyödyntämällä aurinkovoimaa Keuruun ja Riihimäen tehtailla. Jäljelle jääneet päästöt yhtiö kompensoi täysimääräisesti marraskuusta 2021 alkaen. Sitoumuksen myötä Reka Kaapelin koko toimitusketju otetaan mukaan ilmastotyöhön. “Oman toiminnan päästöjen vähentäminen oli ensimmäinen askel, mutta ilmastonmuutoksen torjuminen vaatii järeämpiä toimia ja vaatii jokaisen osallistumista. Siksi sitoudumme asettamaan entistä kunniahimoisemmat tavoitteet koko toimitusketjun osalta.”, kertoo Reka Kaapelin toimitusjohtaja Jukka Poutanen.
Reka Kaapeli on aloittanut konkreettisten tavoitteiden laatimisen, jonka jälkeen tavoitteille haetaan Science Based Targets ilmastojärjestön (SBTi) hyväksyntä. Aikaa näiden päästövähennystavoitteiden esittämiselle ja hyväksynnälle on kaksi vuotta.

Aloitteeseen sitoutuneet yritykset asettavat toiminnalleen tieteeseen perustuvat Pariisin ilmastosopimuksen mukaiset päästövähennystavoitteet. Aloitteessa Suomesta on tähän mennessä mukana 61 yritystä, joista 50 on teollisuusalan yrityksiä.
